Summit Internet - Recommended DNS Settings

Recommended DNS Settings for Summit Internet services

Summit recommends using the following DNS servers for the best performance of your service.

These settings are applicable for Summit Fixed Wireless, Fibre, NBN and 4G services.

VIC, SA

Primary: 103.13.86.140 (Summit VIC)
Secondary: 1.1.1.1 (CloudFlare)

NSW, ACT, QLD

Primary: 103.13.87.140 (Summit NSW)
Secondary: 1.1.1.1 (CloudFlare)

WA

Primary: 1.1.1.1 (CloudFlare)
Secondary: 1.0.0.1 (CloudFlare)

Please Don't Use Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)

Summit Internet recommends against using Google for DNS as their resolvers can provide highly variable response times (even though their ping times are good).

The following graph shows ping times to various DNS servers over a 6 week period. Note that they stay about the same (nice and consistent with low standard deviation).

This is a graph of DNS query resolution times over the same 6 weeks. Note that Googles DNS servers respond quite slowly between week 33 and week 34.

The graph above is an extreme example of Google's DNS servers being slow and was probably the result of Google doing maintenance. The 10 day graph below shows the more usual situation which is still highly variable.

Notes about graphs

Graphs have been generated by a monitoring system in Victoria.

DNS servers are defined as follows:
* Primary DNS: 103.13.86.140
* Secondary DNS: 103.13.87.140
* Google Primary: 8.8.8.8
* Google Secondary: 8.8.4.4
* CloudFlare Primary: 1.1.1.1
* CloudFlare Secondary: 1.0.0.1
